Ireland's employment growth continues to outpace its European counterparts. Between the second quarters of 2004 and 2005 employment level grew by 5.1% and its labour force by 4.9%. The comparable figures for the EU states are 1.5% and 1.3%. Employment in the Irish construction and financial sectors continued to grow strongly with 30,400 and 20,200 new jobs added respectively. All other areas in the services sector recorded significant employment and jobs growth over the year.
Employment increased by 4.7% with the strongest jobs growth recorded in the construction, distribution and business services sectors. Migrant workers account for around half the employed and currently make up 9% of the Irish labour force. Almost 25% new migrants found jobs in the construction industry, while increases were also recorded in other production industries, wholesale and retail trade, as well as hotels and restaurants. Around three quarters of new migrants have come from the 10 new EU states.
The country's labour force grew by 5% in the year to a total of 2,086,500, while the number of people in employment also grew by 5% to just under two million. The labour force now accounts for over 63% of all persons aged 15 and over.
Strong employment growth is evident among older age groups. The employment rate for men aged between 60-64 rose from 53.7% to 57% while the rate for women in 55-59 age group rose from 41.4% to 45.4%. The most significant Irish employment rise was in the 25-34 age group which increased by over 36,000 jobs in the 12 months to the third quarter of 2005.
